Anything which is a bush style plant works really well.
With that being said, while we lived in an apartment complex we grew mini white "egg" eggplants I picked them up this year at kmart in the martha stewart seed area.
At walmart this year I picked up trailing cherry tomatoes- they work great in hanging baskets. I always have hanging baskets of different cherry tomatoes hanging in my kitchen above the dining nook, my 3 year old regularly picked them last year when she wanted one for herself or for her brother. Pear tomatoes work great in pots they are small and cute too. Bush beans, peas, herbs, loose leaf lettuces and spinach work great. Irregardless of what others say you can grow vining plants you simply need to buy very tall stakes and a big pot and staple wire to the stakes winding up. We grew everything from yellow squash to zucchini to cucumbers. We tried one year growing corn and we used large wide low plastic tubs from the dollar general with holes drilled in near the bottom and then grew winter squash up the stalks. They honestly were not that healthy though. I think we needed to fertilize the veggies maybe in that case more. Peppers grow well. The biggest thing is how big is your patio and if it is covered can you uh expand like I did into the yard as long as they are in pots. Another thing is alot of places if you suggest a community garden plot and suggest where they often allow it. After two years of laughing at us using every inch of our area they made one at the place we lived. A garden cuts on the amount of mowing and maintenance needed and it really appeals to the new "green" generation. Oh did not catch that you lived in house sorry – pots can be placed all over the yard. Here is what I copied but I used alot larger rubbermaid tubs and raided used shops- they get them in by the pileload and alot are missing lids .88 or so is what I usually paid, it is then just a simple matter to find a similar size one at the store or in your
pile.http://www.josho.com/gardening.htm

I would try whatever takes your fancy, it would just be trial and error. Some things will be more successful than others:-)

has a whole list. You can google container gardening and get alot of tips on the ins and outs of smaller space gardening. water and drainage are a little different for these.
Also dont forget hanging baskets or "topsy-turvey" pots that allow things like tomatoes to grow upside down.
Aye go the the link in the second answer
Any fruit or vegetable can be grown in a pot. The key is to make sure you water fruits often, and give adequate space for root growth. For vegetables water from under the soil, keeping the top most soil almost dry.

Mel Bartholomew is the man that created the square foot method.
