That might be a good start. Another thing is listen to what the client wants. Things to be considered are how they want it, what they want it made out of or how its down, can you be the one for the job?
Also, don’t be afraid to add in ideas up front to the client. Things clients might not have though of. Make sure that all of this is done up front. Client might not be nearly as happy if big ideas are brought to the table after or during the project.
The big thing is make sure you are capable of completing what the client wants to his expectations. If its someone you know and you know they are picky? Sometimes even the best are shot down by picky customers that are never happy.
Make sure when you are finished with the project customer is happy and your making the amount of money that you feel you are getting paid what you feel is fair. If that price is too high? Someone else might get the job. But if price is the issue, make sure client knows your quality of work and what you are willing to do for them that someone else might overlook.
From what I’ve done, I’ve always brought some previous work done along with references. A couple books containing plant material and a magazine or two with current trends in landscaping. If you have pictures from the walk through, some really rough sketches from the pictures showing some possible ideas, a lot of people need visuals.
You can go to the "clerk of the courts" and get a plat of the site with the house (or just take measurements), then sketch the beds on a drawing to scale and mark which plants will go where on that. Then you can either scan or download plant photos to show them or just take them to the nursery and walk them around to the plants you intend to use and tell them why you recommend those plants – but sometimes clients are just "make this pretty" and do not want to see the pictures or go to the nursery. Other clients will want you to put the hoses out to mark the edge of the bed and bring pictures to show them or even use one of those programs where you take a photo of the house and then use their "plant paints" to make it look like the final product – but some of those programs are expensive. Pick the right presentation method for you, for your client, for their potential additional work (and referrals) and for the price you expect to make off the project – work on adding more and better ways to present things the longer you are in business or as your project sizes get larger.
