There is a new type of container gardening that has become popular recently.  The idea is to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and other vegetables upside down in a container.  This method of container gardening uses plastic soda bottles, milk containers or commercially sold containers that hang on a fence or other structure.

The new method has gotten rave reviews.  When growing these plants this way, there is no need for stakes or other means of support.  It eliminates the problem of the stems of the plants breaking under the weight of the vegetables, which is common when growing tomatoes.

Another advantage to growing vegetables in these upside down planters is that it eliminates any problems with cutworms and also ground fungus.

There are also some disadvantages of this new craze.  These upside down container plants can be very heavy and therefore very challenging to hang.  When deciding on where to hang your plants, make sure the hardware you are using can hold all the weight.  Also keep in mind that these plants will sway with a big gust of wind, which will add to the weight challenge.

Whichever way you decide to grow your vegetables in the traditional container gardening style or in a hanging container (there are benefits and challenges to both) you will soon learn that having a container garden is a rewarding and delicious pastime.
