I’d like to grow a small food-vegetable garden next year, and I have no gardening experience. (My mother, who will be helping me, does, but mostly with flowers.)

The soil in our area is almost entirely clay, with a lot of small stones. We’ve tried mixing sand, commercial topsoil, and compost into it many times, and are gradually removing the stones, but it hasn’t helped much. In addition, the spot I’m thinking of receives only partial sun.

I’m wondering what vegetables will grow best under these conditions. Suggestions of specific varieties (especially heirloom/non-GMO) would be much appreciated, as would any advice from people who have had success under similar conditions.
