How Can I Make My Lawn Look Vibrant?
My front lawn has good potential, but it’s been badly taken care of the last couple years. Most of the grass is dry and brittle and there’s yellow patches all over the place. What can I do to acheive the pretty green lawn that you see in magazines?

It may be time to reseed to cover over the brown patches. Then follow a good watering schedule to make sure the grass gets the water it needs. You didn’t mention weeds, but pulling weeds and using a general weed killer also will help. In the end you want the grass to be strong enough to crowd out the weeds. You also want to look at sun conditions — does the grass get enough sun? This will dictate what type of grass seed you use. Here’s a link to a site that has lots of lawn care info. Good luck!

It depends how much work you are willing to put in. It takes a lot of work to get a lawn looking good and then consistency to keep it that way.
There are a couple of ways you could go about it. If you are someone with disposable income, and not a ton of time, you could contract with TruGreen Chemlawn or some other company that will weed and feed your lawn on a regular basis. Some people frown on this because it does cost $$ and it IS chemicals… but it does work. Outside of the treatments, you would just need to water regularly and mow regularly (hint, mow high and often, it promotes deeper root growth, which makes for a healthier, more durable lawn that requires less water.)
The other route is to go and buy lawn treatment products yourself. I personally recommend Scott’s, it’s the premium product. Get the Scott’s fertilizer with weed control and pay attention to the watering instructions on the bag. The instructions are actually pretty easy to follow, but you just need to be consistent with the watering, that’s the most important ingredient in the equation. Eventually, as your lawn gets healthier and stronger, you will be able to water less often, the goal is once or twice a week, your wallet will thank you!
Back to the watering and disposable income… if you can afford it, an underground sprinkler with a programmable schedule will make things a TON easier on you, it gives you the ability to water before you wake up (which is the best time to water, and you don’t have to run it that long). The other good thing to do with the underground sprinkler is hook it up to it’s own water meter so you don’t get charged for sewage, that will knock out half of the cost of the water you use outside of the house.
