Does It Work to Grow Flowers in Half-Barrels or Tubs?
I always wanted to have a flower garden, but because of the location of our house, I can’t plant a real garden. I saw these large tub like things at the Home Depot in the gardening section… do these works good for growing flowers? If so, what kinds of flowers? Any special instructions?

flowers grow well in pots as long as they are placed in the proper areas the flowers need.. full sun part shade that kinda thing… you need to drill a whole in the bottom so water doesn’t sit at the bottom and rot out your plants roots. most annuals will do well. i live in an apartment and a lot of my plants are either in pots or tubs..
petunias
begonias
inpatients
dianthis
portulaca
Gerber daisies
Shasta daises
alysum
i also put up a trellis in one of the larger tubs and planted morning glories.. to add some height of color…
.. some bulb plants will do well also if the tub is deep enough.. i found an old round pond liner at garage and i planted gladiolas in it..
i added some garden rocks to the bottom of the bigger tubs and then added my dirt.. just giving it some more drainage.. this allows the extra water to escape but blocking some of the dirt from getting out

Yes, you can make a beautiful pot out of these. A secret is to select some base plants (usually greenery) and stick colorful potted plants amoung them. You can hide the pots with a spagnum moss. You can change out the colors with the seasons. Annuals are not that expensive.
ps: I forgot—-you must have drainage. Drill a few holes in the bottom before planting.
Gardening in containers can help you maximize your gardening experience. You can move things around to suit your fancy or to take advantage of difficult sun conditions.
Be sure to use a potting soil rather than top soil. The potting soil is a lighter weight and will drain better. Speaking of drainage, make sure your containers have drainage holes in them. You will need top be more aware of moisture conditions in your containers, but don’t over water them, either. There are potting soils available that will help retain moisture, so check out your options at your local garden center.

We are looking for a new house so this year my vegetable garden is in tubs so when we find a new house my veggies come too!
Go to your local (family owned and well established) farm stand and ask what plants will grow well in tubs in your area. Just make sure you know how much sun they will require before you take them home.
